Last November 2024 Miku Tsuchiya and I were able to reconnect through making site specific art together.
We were able to listen to each other by listening to ourselves, creating space for ourselves and thereby for the other, finding ways to communicate our thoughts, feelings and fears, creating trust, a chance to be.

‘Gazing: Cassie Kinoshi and Anne Verheij in conversation’ hosted by Anu Henriques The program consists out of a selection of 4 of our works from the last 9 years!
Long-time collaborators composer Cassie Kinoshi and visual artist Anne Verheij join us at LSFF for an in-depth exploration of their experimental film and immersive installation work together so far. Initially forming their creative partnership in 2014 after meeting during their respective studies at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, Kinoshi and Verheij have since built a portfolio of works which explore a multitude of inner dialogues drawing from the female experience, the journey to re-opening oneself after trauma and our innate desire to form connections and communicate. The conversation will by hosted by Anu Henriques (Skin Deep).
On An Empty Stomach (2014) TRAILER [ How might an intuitive painterly approach to film engender a spatial encounter? ] On An Empty Stomach tells the tale of my hunger for the moving image. Whilst traveling between points A and B, I have encountered many wondrous worlds of light, movement and abstraction. This made me forget all about time, surroundings and the social etiquettes in public spaces, thus resulting in almost getting locked in the space between the aircraft and terminal building at Gatwick Airport.
Undercurrent (2017) TRAILER We find ourselves uncomfortably close with a dancer on screen. Are we allowed to possess her? She becomes aware that she is no longer alone. On the verge of losing possession of her body she takes control, turning her attention to the camera and the audience behind it, encroaching on them like a predator stalking its prey.
OFFSET (2018) TRAILER There is no guidebook on how to survive the hurricane of pain when you find yourself betrayed. Trapped between walls of pain, you try to fight your way out. How much of the pain do you need in order to survive, what time do you get to test the truth of your expectations and how much do you let yourself be told? In fight for breath, love balances us sharply on hope’s blade.
e c h o (2021) TRAILER our surroundings, our thoughts, our voices, our memories, our journeys echo is the new immersive film installation from long-time collaborators composer Cassie Kinoshi and visual artist Anne Verheij. The installation is a sonic and visual exploration of the individual journeys taken within ourselves and alongside each other as we collectively navigate the city of London.
ONES VANISHING POINT a woman is stuck under the surface of London’s brutalist architecture where echoes of mankind linger. The inseparable relationship between the interior and exterior is put to the test in a fight of the natural body versus the manmade surroundings. Through strong movement and impossible angles the spectator starts to lose their sense of gravity, drifting closer to their own vanishing point.ONES COUNTERPOINT depicts the inner voice of a haunted woman by crawling under her moving skin. The interior and exterior are brought together by the three elements of water, wind and earth. As the lines between movement and manipulation blur, the woman’s calm facade cracks, revealing something dark and mysterious that makes its way to the surface.ONES is a collaboration between Dutch visual artist Anne Verheij and Japanese choreographer Miku Tsuchiya, in which film and dance are explored across the former pedestrian tunnels of Elephant & Castle. Juxtaposing two dance films created from the same footage, ONES captures the individual’s rhythm beating amidst the pulse of the restless city.

In Passing A short film about navigating the invisible to connect. Through movement and unexpected camera angles we try to find our way into the 24/7 world in which we start to lose connection with ourselves and others. How close can the digital age bring us together and which borders do we cross?
The first of our two screenings celebrating butoh co-founders Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno through wildly inventive and highly surreal cinematic works.
Our bodies are in crisis! This programme brings together Chiaki Nagano and Takahiko Iimura’s collaborations with butoh pioneers Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno. JAEFF attempts to define a dance style which defies definition. Beginning with the first entry in Nagano’s Mr O trilogy, viewers will be plunged headfirst into the grotesque absurdities of a form which seeks to “resist fixity”. The unforgettable imagery of Portrait of Mr O is complemented by Iimura’s “cinedance” recordings of Hijikata’s early 1960s performances. Both Anma and Rose Color Dance are efforts to film choreography and to choreograph film. Connecting these works to present-day conceptions of movement, society, and technology is Anne Verheij’s In Passing.
