Long-time collaborators composer Cassie Kinoshi and visual artist Anne Verheij join us at LSFF for an in-depth exploration of their experimental film and immersive installation work together so far. Initially forming their creative partnership in 2014 after meeting during their respective studies at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, Kinoshi and Verheij have since built a portfolio of works which explore a multitude of inner dialogues drawing from the female experience, the journey to re-opening oneself after trauma and our innate desire to form connections and communicate. The conversation will by hosted by Anu Henriques (Skin Deep).

On An Empty Stomach (2014) TRAILER
[ How might an intuitive painterly approach to film engender a spatial encounter? ] On An Empty Stomach tells the tale of my hunger for the moving image. Whilst traveling between points A and B, I have encountered many wondrous worlds of light, movement and abstraction. This made me forget all about time, surroundings and the social etiquettes in public spaces, thus resulting in almost getting locked in the space between the aircraft and terminal building at Gatwick Airport.

Undercurrent (2017) TRAILER
We find ourselves uncomfortably close with a dancer on screen. Are we allowed to possess her?
She becomes aware that she is no longer alone. On the verge of losing possession of her body she takes control, turning her attention to the camera and the audience behind it, encroaching on them like a predator stalking its prey.

OFFSET (2018) TRAILER
There is no guidebook on how to survive the hurricane of pain when you find yourself betrayed. Trapped between walls of pain, you try to fight your way out.
How much of the pain do you need in order to survive, what time do you get to test the truth of your expectations and how much do you let yourself be told?
In fight for breath, love balances us sharply on hope’s blade.

e c h o (2021) TRAILER
our surroundings, our thoughts, our voices, our memories, our journeys echo is the new immersive film installation from long-time collaborators composer Cassie Kinoshi and visual artist Anne Verheij. The installation is a sonic and visual exploration of the individual journeys taken within ourselves and alongside each other as we collectively navigate the city of London.

ONES [ 2 women, 2 countries, 2 disciplines, 1 film ]

Miku Tsuchiya – dancer | editor

Anne Verheij – concept | cinematographer | editor

ONES VANISHING POINT
a woman is stuck under the surface of London’s brutalist architecture where echoes of mankind linger.
The inseparable relationship between the interior and exterior is put to the test in a fight of the natural body versus the manmade surroundings. Through strong movement and impossible angles the spectator starts to lose their sense of gravity, drifting closer to their own vanishing point.
ONES COUNTERPOINT
depicts the inner voice of a haunted woman by crawling under her moving skin. The interior and exterior are brought together by the three elements of water, wind and earth.
As the lines between movement and manipulation blur, the woman’s calm facade cracks, revealing something dark and mysterious that makes its way to the surface.
ONES
is a collaboration between Dutch visual artist Anne Verheij and Japanese choreographer Miku Tsuchiya, in which film and dance are explored across the former pedestrian tunnels of Elephant & Castle.
Juxtaposing two dance films created from the same footage, ONES captures the individual’s rhythm beating amidst the pulse of the restless city.

#TeKijkGezet – 4th edition Sept-Nov 2021

The fourth edition of Te Kijk Gezet is now on display @ Koningsstraat 6, Amsterdam.
A collaboration between @AVWS-artwork and myself.

Tegen de Zwaartekracht [Defying Gravity]
This 4th edition of Te Kijk Gezet is the latest result of the ongoing conversation about letting go, in which the artists research their family bond and age difference.
Defying Gravity is a spatial design by Anne in which she provides a third of the space for each artist to use. Visual layers are created by horizontal planes that both take and create space. An exciting relation between the works reveals itself by putting them in this framed context. The three artworks play with the recognition and denial of material, composition and expectations.

echo @ Kings Place London 19-20 November

Cassie Kinoshi and I are excited to announce that our new collaboration echo can be seen on 19 and 20 November at Kings Place London as part of London Unwrapped.

Experience echo, the new immersive film installation from long-time collaborators composer Cassie Kinoshi (Artist in residence for London Unwrapped) and visual artist Anne Verheij.
The installation is a sonic and visual exploration of our connection with ourselves and each other in London.

Filmed entirely using handheld cameras, echo is an immersive audio-visual triptych with London as its main character. Day to day experiences of London life are manipulated through exploratory editing and camera movement, creating an encapsulating visceral experience of the ever changing cityscape.

echo’s electro-acoustic score was created with field-recordings captured around London; familiar sounds of trains, crowds, park life and traffic are altered and re-conditioned into the unfamiliar. Blended with synthesisers, a string quintet formed from members of Chineke! Ensemble were recorded to provide ethereal textures. These samples further elevate an evocative sound world that emulates the ever-changing experience of existing in the transformative city of London.

Anders dan anderen
© Alida Verheij 2021

Alleen in het hoofd
Eenzaam in het lijf
Omgeven door somberheid
Dat is het gevoel als van een depressie
Alles is anders, voelt anders of voelt niets
Maar…..

Langzaam laat de depressie los
De cirkel gedachten verdwijnen
Het lichaam wordt warm
Langzaam komt vertrouwen
Laat alles los wat zwart is

ONES COUNTERPOINT trailer

The trailer of ONES COUNTERPOINT is online!

Please go and check it out!

More news and developments from us on our ONES collaboration soon straight from Japan @AnnePointNL !

ONES_COUNTERPOINT©ANNE•2016

ONES COUNTERPOINT depicts the inner voice of a haunted woman by crawling under her moving skin.
The interior and exterior are brought together by the three elements of water, wind and earth.
As the lines between movement and manipulation blur, the woman’s calm facade cracks, revealing something dark and mysterious that makes its way to the surface.

In ONES COUNTERPOINT Anne Verheij (NL) and Miku Tsuchiya (Japan) cross the vast distance between the UK and Japan via internet to make their second diptych (the first being nominated at LSFF 2017 for Best Experimental Short Film).
Their two individually created contemporary dance films, made from the same footage, are juxtaposed on a single screen where the soundtrack, especially created out of the field recordings they made in the UK and Japan, bring them together.
